Academic Researchers Award and Fluxtrol Student Research Award Winners Announced at HEAT TREAT 2021

Dr. Lesley Frame, Mr. Ethan Hoyt, Ms. Michelle Kent, and Mr. Joseph Boettcher win prestigious awards at HEAT TREAT 21

Detroit, October 26th /BusinessWire/ - Fluxtrol Inc. and ASM International are pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Prof. Valentin S. Nemkov Academic Research Award and Fluxtrol Student Research Competition. Congratulations to Dr. Lesley Frame for winning the Prof. Valentin S. Nemkov Academic Research Award and to Mr. Ethan Hoyt, Ms. Michelle Kent, and Mr. Joseph Boettcher for winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively, in the Fluxtrol Student Research Competition.

The prestigious awards were presented during the HEAT TREAT 21 conference held September 14-16th, 2021 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Prof. Valentin S. Nemkov Academic Research Award

Dr. Lesley Frame, through her roles as Assistant Professor at University of Connecticut and Director of the Center for Materials Data Processing, contributed to excellent research that was part of the traditional oral program, Fluxtrol Student Poster Competition, and the inaugural Strong Bar Competition in addition to participating on the Organizing Committee for the event and acting as a Session Chair.

Dr. Frame will receive $2,500 from ASM International that can be used to support research activity at the Academic Researcher’s Institution. The award can be used for travel expenses, conference fees, scholarship money, or laboratory equipment at the discretion of Dr. Frame to help support her team’s continued research efforts.

The Prof. Valentin S. Nemkov Academic Research Award is Fluxtrol Inc’s annual recognition program for Post-Doctoral Researchers, Lecturers and Professors (Academic Researchers) that is presented annually at either IMAT or the ASM Heat Treating Society Conference & Expo for the researcher that had the greatest impact on the event in the area of thermal processing of materials. The next award will be given at IMAT 2022 in New Orleans, LA, September 12-15, 2022. Candidates are required to be present at IMAT 2022 and the winner will be announced at the event.

Fluxtrol Student Poster Competition

Congratulations to the following student winners whose research was deemed by judges to be of extraordinary quality and impact to the field of thermal processing:

1st Place – Mr. Ethan Hoyt, Colorado School of Mines, Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center, Golden, CO – Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistance of High Strength 9260 Bar Steel Heat Treated by Quenching and Partitioning. He received a $2,500 award.

2nd Place – Ms. Michelle Kent, Colorado School of Mines, Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center, Golden, CO – The Effects of Thermal History on Toughness of Ni-based Corrosion Resistant Alloys during in-situ Hydrogen Chargin. She received a $1,000 award.

3rd Place – Mr. Joseph Boettcher, MolyCop USA – Quench severity of AISI 1045 steel utilizing intensive spray quenching. He received a $500 award.

The Fluxtrol Student Research Competition is a competition-based award and recognition program for young innovative scientists/professionals, seeking to encourage participation in ASM HTS, and to provide attractive offers and opportunities in the worldwide Thermal Processing community. Fluxtrol and ASM solicits abstract submissions based on thermal processing of metal/metal-containing components for this competition. This is a 2-step competition encompassing a poster competition, as well as an oral presentation competition for semi-finalists.

To be eligible, a researcher must be a student who is currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at a University, Institute or College (University) or are within one year of graduation, but conducted the research while still enrolled at a University, having completed an aspect of thermal processing research. The next award will be given at IMAT 2022 in New Orleans, LA, September 12-15, 2022. Candidates are required to be present at IMAT 2022 and the winner will be announced at the event.
